If a shingle is missing or broken, locate the problem area. Often, this is a result of wind damage or aging.
Use a flat pry bar to carefully lift the shingles above the damaged one. This will expose the nails holding the damaged shingle.
Pull out the nails holding the damaged shingle, then remove the shingle.
Slide a new shingle in place, making sure it fits snugly. Nail it down with roofing nails (preferably galvanized or stainless steel to resist rust).
Once the shingle is in place, use roofing cement or a sealant to seal around the edges, ensuring no water can get under the shingle.

Gently heat the curled edges with a heat gun (on low heat) and then press them down into place.
Pull out the nails holding the damaged shingle, then remove the shingle.
If you have a leak, locate it by checking your attic or inside for water stains. Water can travel along the roof structure, so the leak may not be directly below the visible damage.
Once you find the source of the leak, apply roofing cement or a rubberized sealant to cover cracks or holes. For larger holes, you may need to replace the affected shingles as described earlier.
Inspect the flashing for any rust, cracks, or holes. If necessary, replace or reseal the flashing with roofing cement or sealant.
If the flashing has come loose, use roofing nails or screws to secure it back in place, and then seal the edges with roofing cement.
