Replacing Missing or Damaged Shingles

Find the damaged area:

If a shingle is missing or broken, locate the problem area. Often, this is a result of wind damage or aging.

Lift the surrounding shingles:

Use a flat pry bar to carefully lift the shingles above the damaged one. This will expose the nails holding the damaged shingle.

Remove the old shingle:

Pull out the nails holding the damaged shingle, then remove the shingle.

Replace with a new shingle:

Slide a new shingle in place, making sure it fits snugly. Nail it down with roofing nails (preferably galvanized or stainless steel to resist rust).

Seal the edges:

Once the shingle is in place, use roofing cement or a sealant to seal around the edges, ensuring no water can get under the shingle.

Fix Curling Shingles

If shingles are curling at the edges, you can try to flatten them.

Use a heat gun:

Gently heat the curled edges with a heat gun (on low heat) and then press them down into place.

Remove the old shingle:

Pull out the nails holding the damaged shingle, then remove the shingle.

Repairing Leaks

Identify the leak

If you have a leak, locate it by checking your attic or inside for water stains. Water can travel along the roof structure, so the leak may not be directly below the visible damage.

Patch the area:

Once you find the source of the leak, apply roofing cement or a rubberized sealant to cover cracks or holes. For larger holes, you may need to replace the affected shingles as described earlier.

Fix Curling Shingles

o Flashing is the metal or rubber material installed around roof features like chimneys, skylights, or vents. If it's damaged, it can lead to leaks.

Check for rust or gaps:

Inspect the flashing for any rust, cracks, or holes. If necessary, replace or reseal the flashing with roofing cement or sealant.

Reinstall loose flashing:

If the flashing has come loose, use roofing nails or screws to secure it back in place, and then seal the edges with roofing cement.
